The Marietta City School District is pleased to announce that it has earned an overall rating of 3 stars on the 2025 Ohio State Report Card, reflecting steady academic progress and ongoing efforts to support student achievement.

This score is an increase from last year’s 2.5 rating, showing signs that the district’s work in recent years is starting to improve many metrics throughout the district.

In areas critical to student equity and future success, the district earned high marks, scoring 4 out of 5 stars in both Gap Closing and College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness.

The Gap Closing component measures how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for student subgroups, such as those based on race, socioeconomic status, and disability. A 4-star rating in this area indicates that Marietta City Schools are exceeding state standards in promoting educational equity and addressing achievement gaps. This mirrors the district's mantra of Every Student, Every Day.

Equally notable is the district’s 4-star rating in College, Career, Workforce, and Military Readiness, which assesses how well students are prepared for life after high school. This rating reflects success in equipping students with the academic knowledge, technical skills, and real-world experiences needed to pursue a wide range of post-secondary pathways. This is particularly impressive considering this was the first year that the district had the requirements necessary to grade this program.

“These scores affirm that our district is making meaningful strides that bode well for our students' long  term success,” said Mary Schaeffer, Superintendent  of Marietta City School District. “We are especially proud of our high marks in gap closing, which demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that all students have access to high-quality education and the support they need to thrive.”

Marietta High School specifically earned a 3.5 out of 5 due to a number of factors including a large increase in the school’s math scores, and a very high graduation rate.

Tim Fleming, Director of Curriculum and Technology, is very pleased with the growth he has seen over the past several years despite the challenges that come with the implementation of new practices. “Thanks to the efforts of our staff and the implementation of our high-quality instructional materials, we are seeing extremely promising jumps in our student’s proficiency levels across multiple subjects and grades.”

Over the last year, 8th grade ELA went from 35.8% proficient to 55.6% and 6th grade ELA jumped from 43.8% to 56.6%.

Since 2021 several subjects have seen dramatic increases in proficiency. Algebra went from 33.5 % in 2021 to 69.9%, Geometry went from 31.6% to 46.1%, American History went from 53.3% to 75.21% and 8th Grade Science went from 41.9% to 61%.

While the overall rating of 3 stars indicates that the district is meeting state expectations, the administration sees it as a baseline for future growth.

“We view these results not just as a reflection of our current performance, but as a foundation to build on,” said Schaeffer.  “We are committed to continuous improvement and to pushing toward excellence across all areas.”

The district will continue implementing targeted initiatives to raise performance in key academic indicators, expand career and technical education opportunities, and provide all students with the tools they need to succeed beyond graduation.
